Today Is The Beginning

Lesbian couple wedded at SF City Hall / Women had been together for five decades. That’s right folks, you read that correctly. San Francisco is the first city in the U.S. to marry a gay couple! This is inspite of a state law saying that “marraige is between a man and a woman.”

Who knows how this will turn out as similar issues are resonating right now in states such as Mass. It hits a particular spot for me as of late. I just got hired at the company that I’ve been contracting at for the last year. Whenever I was filling out the forms on Monday, it became abundantly clear how discriminatory things were. Amdocs does not offer domestic partner benefits. This is the first job I have ever had that offers benefits to its employees beyond health insurance. Courtland and I have been together for 7 years. It was like being offered a tray of sweets and then the waiter saying, “Oh, your gay? I’m sorry, then you can’t have these. But don’t they look delicious? Tell ya what, get married to a girl and you can have them. Isn’t that generous of us?”

It made me realise that I don’t want to have “domestic partner” benefits. I don’t want to have a “civil union.” I want to Marry the man I love and have it recognized for all the world to see and enjoy all the privledges that come with marraige. As the Mass. judge said, calling it anything else than marriage is relegating people to second class status.
